Great cuts since 2004

Gareth started barbering in 2004, aged eighteen, as an apprentice at Sax Hair and Beauty in Huddersfield. Twenty-two years on, he is still on the tools most days a week, now in his own shop on Mill Lane in Brighouse.

From apprentice to Mill Lane

The apprenticeship came first, then a few years working across different shops, which is where you pick up the parts of the trade no single place can teach you. In 2010 he opened Tag Hair Design in Huddersfield and grew it to eleven staff. Mill Lane Barbers opened in Brighouse in 2021.

Welcome to our shop

Matte black walls, modern lighting, exposed wood ceiling, polished concrete floor, chrome chairs, boxing prints. No old barber pole and no shaving mugs. The loudest thing in the room is the capes.

What he’s good at

Fades, mostly. Skin fades, tapers, burst fades, and the low and mid versions that most people ask for without knowing the name. Then textured hair: Afro and Afro-Caribbean hair types are cut here every week, which across this part of West Yorkshire is still not a given.

He will also work from a photo. Most people cannot describe the cut they have seen online, and they do not need to be able to. A lot of clients arrive having been let down somewhere that did not know what to do with their hair.
